Sainte-Marguerite island
Nature, history and sea
Île Sainte-Marguerite is the largest of the two Lérins Islands. More oriented towards visitors, it offers not only beautiful walking trails and stunning viewpoints, but also the Fort Royal with its old prison, as well as several small restaurants. But this is no ordinary prison: it once housed the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask during the reign of Louis XIV. The island is therefore a real dive into history.
The paths lined with fragrant pine trees provide panoramic views over the Bay of Cannes. You can also relax in secluded coves with small pebble beaches. On the southern side of the island, there are views of Île Saint-Honorat, and just 80 meters from the coast lies an underwater eco-museum. Here, you can go snorkeling not only to see Mediterranean fish, but also to admire six submerged sculptures.
From Théoule-sur-Mer, a Riviera Lines boat takes you to the island in about 25 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the Tourist Office.
My Personal Experience
I love taking the boat to this island – it offers not only stunning views but also a refreshing breeze on a summer day. Once I arrive, I always like to visit the fort, which also hosts a micro-aquarium with Mediterranean fish species. Listening to the cicadas, I then walk down to the southern coast to put on my snorkel mask and dive into the water. I’ve spotted many fish species here, as well as octopuses and even a moray eel. Be careful though, sometimes you may also come across a jellyfish.
